Sir Alfred Munnings - After the Race

This painting is a wonderful example of the work of perhaps Britain’s greatest equestrian artist. It shows a pair of racehorses gently being brought under control at the end of an important race, in an evocative representation of racing in England in the years before the Second World War.

Munnings’ love of horses was reflected in his enthusiasm for racing, and he was a keen racegoer until the very last years of his life. While he received acclaim for his depictions of Ascot, from collectors as significant as Queen Mary, he much preferred the intimate atmosphere of such venues as Sandown, Hurst Park, and Newmarket, which he described as “the most beautiful course in the world”.

This work was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1937, and was purchased by the City of Southampton, through the Chipperfield Bequest Fund, soon after. It made a further appearance at the Royal Academy when it formed part of the United Artists’ Exhibition of 1940. The painting now hangs in the Main Hall of Southampton City Art Gallery.
